Research by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation found that the IT sector saw the fastest growth in permanent roles out of seven other competing sectors.
It also created the second highest number of jobs on a temporary or contract basis – roles which have grown in number every month since August 2009, the study shows.
Anecdotal evidence seen by the REC, whose member firms include IT recruiters, also suggests the growth in contract billings would have been stronger but for weather-related disruption at a number of client organisations.
No shortage of contract IT skills were reported by members in January, representing an improvement on the previous month when the agencies struggled to find IT sales staff.
However, the recruiters did notice a shortage of permanent candidates trained in IT support, CAD and M&E, indicating an opening for contract staff with such skills.
For all temporary professionals, pay rates climbed for the first time since September 2008, partly reflecting increased demand just at a time when the growth in availability of such workers is easing.
